DALLAS, Texas - Newman travelled south to take on former Heartland Conference foe, Dallas Baptist. The Jets and Patriots battled one another for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
DBU avenged that season's series sweep by the Jets with a homecoming victory Saturday night. The Jets fell to the Patriots 84-53 sending the Jets back to the .500 mark they began the week with, now 2-2. DBU picked up its second win to advance to 2-3 on the young season.
A raucous crowd over 1,800 DBU supporters welcomed the Jets to the floor. The Patriots fed off the energy and were off to an early 17-8 lead. The jets could not recover the early deficit the remainder of the evening.
Newman was out-shot 31% to 52% from the field. DBU's physical play earned the Jets a distinctive 24-9 free throw advantage, but it was not enough to overcome a 50% to 27% 3-point shooting advantage held by the Patriots.
Newman got just 13 points off its bench. Chuka Mekkam sparked for 11 of those points.
Stevie Strong finished with a team best 20 points, with 10 of them coming at the charity stripe.
Newman worked to gather 9 offensive rebounds, yet only yielded 2 second chance points.
The Jet vs. Patriot series will return to a hiatus. When the two former Heartland Conference members square off again, it will be DBU holding a 15-12 series advantage.
Next up, the Jets return home for a pair of home non-conference tests against Tabor at 7:30 Tuesday and York on Saturday.
