Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot start by FHSU troubles Jets on the road

HAYS, Kan. - The Jets Men's Basketball team (5-7, 1-5) were on the road again on Sunday taking on Fort Hays State (8-3, 3-2). An early lead by Fort Hays kept Newman down, and they were unable to fully recover, falling 83-61.

Newman fell behind early after a 21-7 run by Fort Hays to start off the game. The Jets just couldn't make any shots fall early, shooting a poor 2-12 from the field during that run. The scoring wouldn't improve much after either, and a large bit of contact allowed by the refs didn't help them, as the game was made to be very physical from the start.

Fort Hays was very efficient in comparison in the first half, shooting 54.8% from the field. This made it challenging for Newman to mount any sort of comeback before halftime, and they wouldn't be able to do so, going down 28-47 before the whistle. Thomas Zevgaras had a strong first half leading the Jets with 12.

Newman started the second half strong as they attempted to mount a comeback, bringing the deficit down to 15. Fort Hays ended that shortly after however, going on a 6-0 run and bringing their lead back above 20, and the Jets were just unable to recover.

Thomas Zevgaras led the Jets in points scored with 18 and shared rebound leading duties with three total. He also shot a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.

Stevie Strong was just behind with 15 points, also grabbing three rebounds.

Latik Murphy was the only other Jet to reach double digits, scoring 12.

Next up for Newman is a short Christmas break before they return to Fugate to take on Emporia State on New Years Eve.
