WICHITA, Kan. – Newman made up a contest with Missouri Western State Monday night that was originally scheduled for January 20
th. The Jets and Griffons played a back and forth second half that MWSU found itself on top of when the final horn blew. The Griffons took the contest 73-67.
Newman falls to 4-18 (1-16 MIAA) with the heartbreaking defeat on their home floor. The Griffons escaped with the win to keep their playoff hopes alive and advance to 12-13 (8-9 MIAA).
The Jets cruised at a fast pace in the opening half. Newman shot 6-9 from three and 61.5% from the field.
Ian Lee and
Israel Barnes dominated the Griffons early on as the two eclipsed double figures with 16 and 10 points respectively. Lee was a perfect 6-6 and 4-4 from three point range.
The Jets led 39-32 after 20 minutes as
Branden Bunn buried a deep two as time expired.
After the half, Newman completed a 10-0 run between the end of the first half and beginning of the second half when an
Israel Barnes' jumper stretched the Jets lead to their largest of the night at 19:04 in the second half. The Jets were up 44-32 at that point.
Missouri Western's offense was sparked midway through the second half as the Griffons rattled off 7 in a row to swing the lead their way. Over the final 11 minutes the two teams traded the lead 5 times before MWSU used free throws to extend their lead to a final margin of 6 points. Missouri Western used a 41-28 second half margin to escape 73-67.
Newman was led by the tandem of
Ian Lee and
Israel Barnes who each scored 21 points on the night.
MWSU was led by Will Eames who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Bubak scored all 12 of the Griffon bench points.
A major swing in momentum was the free throw disparity as the Jets had just 10 to the Griffons 30. The Jets just had 2 after one half while MWSU had 11 attempts in the opening half. That exceeded the Jets' game total of 10.
Newman's next contests will be on the road as they will hit a three game swing at Northeastern State, Rogers State and Lincoln. The first of the three will be played Thursday night in Tahlequah at 7:30 PM.
