TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Newman visited the Northeastern State Riverhawks Thursday night. The Jets took the last matchup back on January 8
th 75-66, but the Riverhawks had different plans in the NSU Event Center. NSU rattled off 85 points to even the season series at one. The Jets fell 85-59.
Newman falls to 4-19 (1-17 MIAA) with the loss. Northeastern State sits at 13-12 (8-11 MIAA) after their decisive victory.
The Jets and Riverhawks pushed and pulled one another as the two teams were feeling one another out in the first half. The Riverhawks jumped out to a 12 point lead in the opening 20 minutes before an
Israel Barnes layup with 27 seconds remaining cut it to 10 going into the break.
The second half was all NSU. The Riverhawks outpaced the Jets 46-30 in the second period. Newman trailed by as many as 35 and was unable to find a rhythm to compete with the NSU scoring pace.
Despite being down two starter caliber players, Newman had a quality day at the office from deep, netting ten trios and shooting 41.7%. The Riverhawks on the other hand were scoring at will and used 10 second chance points, 9 points off turnovers and 22 points in the paint to extend their commanding lead.
Israel Barnes went for 22 points.
Branden Bunn and
Jorge Oliva each added 8 points, while
Aleksa Jovanovic scored a season best 7 points.
Newman heads to Rogers State on Saturday for a 3:30 PM tipoff.
