Steele's swing seals MIAA series victory

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Newman picked up an MIAA series win against Rogers State Monday afternoon.  The Jets and Hillcats played two on Sunday to open up their series that was postponed due to snowy conditions in Oklahoma.  Newman took game one 5-2 and lost the second matchup 8-7.  Monday was a completely different game as the Jets used a solid start and a late homerun to edge out the Hillcats 2-1 for the series.

Three total runs were scored in game three.  Zack Hargrove got the run scoring started in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly that scored Carson Hawks.

The Hillcats got that run back with yet another risky first and third play.  The gamble paid off for RSU as Holguin was tagged out by first baseman Jenner Steele just after Nelson touched the plate.

The score held at 1-1 through 8 complete.  The start that the Jets got from Garrett VandeVenter was superb.  100 pitches for 8 innings of 6 hit ball and just the one earned run allowed.  VandeVenter fanned 5 Hillcat batters and induced 3 double plays on the ground.

In the top of the ninth, Jenner Steele came up to the plate with one away.  Down one ball and two strikes, Steele came uncorked on a ball and hit one out to left center to put the Jets ahead 2-1.

Connor Langrell came in and did what he does in save situations and closed the door with two strikeouts.  Langrell picked up his third save while VandeVenter picked up his third win in as many starts.

Newman is now 11-4 (2-1 MIAA).
