Game Recap: Baseball |

Offense carries the Jets to a day 2 sweep and series win at SNU

BETHANY, Okla. – Newman finished out its series with Southern Nazarene at Putnam City with two games starting mid-morning on Monday.  Newman took both game with an offensive outburst and some late inning heroics.  Newman took game one 15-2 and finished off the series with a 12-11 comeback win.

Newman now sits at 3-1 after picking up the two wins on Monday.  SNU falls to 1-3 after their opening series with the Jets.

Game 1:

The Newman offense hit their alarm and went straight to work with the 10 AM first pitch.  Newman scored 15 runs and did not go down quietly in any of the innings getting baserunners on in each top half of the 7 innings played out in game 1.

Meanwhile on the hill, Nate Denniston was all business giving up just 3 hits and 2 runs while dealing 7 strikeouts.  Denniston's best frame was easily his second as he struck out the side after the Jets hung a 4 spot in the top of the second.

The Jets' 14 hits were comprised of 8 extra base hits.  Carson Hawks whacked three doubles driving in 3 runs, while Tyler Push's three-run triple in the top of the second was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to Newman scoring on the day.

The Jets poured on 6 runs in the top of the 7th to close out the game as the 15-2 lead was enough to close out the Storm to secure at least a series split for Newman.

Game 2:

A split was not enough for Drew Maus' club.  The Jets played a back and forth second game on the day that required two late home runs to propel the Jets through the Strom.

A quick 6-2 lead for the Jets had them feeling good about their chances, but 8 unanswered runs put the Jets in a steep hole headed into the top of the 6th.

Trailing 10-6, Carson Hawks singled to right making way for Hayden VanDePol.  VanDePol lifted a ball out over the right field fence to cut the lead to two.  With two away in the 6th Zack Stewart stepped up with two on base and blasted one to deep center for a game tying two run double.

The top of the 7th brought the lineup back around to VanDePol with one on and just Deja Vu struck as VanDePol sent another big fly out of the yard to put the Jets ahead 12-10.

VanDePol's big flies proved enough despite SNU clawing another run back in the bottom of the 7th.  The Jets secured the series 12-11.

Connor Langrell picked up the game two win.

VanDePol finished the day 4-8 with 7 RBI a double and 2 home runs, including that game 2 game winner.

Newman will be on the road again Wednesday at Northwestern Oklahoma State for a 2 PM first pitch.
