The Jets pick up their second MIAA conference series win on the season and hold a 14-8 (4-5 MIAA) mark. MWSU continues their in conference slide and drops to 4-14 (2-7 MIAA).
Asher Finke picked up his fourth win on the season with a day that was bumpy at times, especially in the 3
rd and 6
th inning. The Texas native only punched out one Griffon while conceding 9 hits, including 4 home runs, and 5 earned runs.
The Griffons could hang their hat on a 10 run 12 hit day, but the Jets had that extra juice today that was needed to take the series.
The Jets posted a 6 spot in the fourth inning after going down three nothing. After games one and two, seeing the two squads trade big innings was nothing out of the ordinary.
Jenner Steele got things started in the 4
th inning by singling home
Tyler Push.
Carson Hawks followed that up with a massive homerun to center field, his second in as many days. Later in the inning,
Hayden VanDePol reached on a fielder's choice scoring
Lincoln Choate, then
Anthony Ferrante doubled VanDePol in. The Jets were not done, however, as
Jake Angelico capped off the big inning with a sacrifice fly.
After adding 2 more runs in the 6
th to take an 8-3 lead, MWSU tagged Finke for back-to-back homeruns and 4 runs to cut it to 8-7.
Newman answered quickly scoring 2 off a
Zack Hargrove double as part of a 4-4 2 double 5 RBI day for himself. Hargrove picked up his other two RBI's in the 8
th with a single into center field after two had already come across to score before his at bat.
MWSU tried making that final push when they scored 3 in the bottom of the ninth, including 2 off of their fifth homerun, but it just was not enough.
Ian Lecki earned his first save of the season going for the final three innings and fanning 4.
Up next the Jets will begin a 6 game 8 day home stand as they welcome in state MIAA foe Fort Hays State to town for a single game on Tuesday. First pitch slated for 3 PM. For more information on everything Newman Baseball, stay tuned to newmanjets.com.
