Game Recap: Baseball |

VanDePol hits for the cycle as the Jets' comeback bid falls short

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman hosted Washburn for game 2 of their series Saturday afternoon.  Similar to yesterday, the Jets and Ichabods played in gusty conditions with winds of 20-30 miles per hour.  WU kept the Jets from coming all the way back as Newman had the tying run on deck.  Washburn escaped 22-19.

Final Newman 19 Washburn 22.

The Jets sit at 11-6 (2-3 MIAA) while Washburn picks up their fourth MIAA win, and advance to 14-4 (5-0 MIAA).

41 combined runs and 38 combined hits.  Baseball in March.  The windy conditions had to be battled by both sides on Saturday afternoon.  Starting pitchers Nate Denniston for
Newman and Casey Steward for Washburn could not get settled in.  With varying wind gusts and changing wind directions, the two gave up homeruns and extra base hits that would have been otherwise avoidable.

Runs were scored in each half inning except for 5 times.  The Jets held the Ichabods to 0 runs in the top of the ninth and rallied off 4 in the bottom half before WU got out of the jam.

Hayden VanDePol had a day at the dish, rattling off 4 hits, completing the cycle.  VanDePol finished 4-5 with 2 RBI and 5 runs scored.

Despite the Jets' offensive success of 19 runs on 15 hits, Washburn weathered the storm to get the win.  The Jets struck out 14 times.  The Ichabod starting pitcher Casey Steward struck out 10 Jets to lead all pitchers.

Neither teams pitching coaches can be thrilled with their staffs' performance.  Washburn escaped with the win, but it was far too close for comfort.  On the Newman side, scoring 19 runs in a loss is an extremely frustrating statistic.  Given the weather conditions, both teams understand that these results do not exemplify the talent level of any of their arms.

Up next the Jets and Ichabods will play at 10:30 AM for the final game of the three game set on Sunday.  The game time was moved up due to impending weather systems.
