Game Recap: Baseball |

Defensive miscues hinder the Jets vs. Washburn

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman and Washburn wrapped up their three game set early Sunday at McCarthy Field.  After two days of constant wind gusts blowing out, the weather took a turn and blew in from the outfield, bring wintery cold weather with it.  The Ichabods completed the three game sweep of the Jets with an 8-5 victory.

Final Newman 5 Washburn 8.

The Jets fall to 11-7 (2-4 MIAA) with the conclusion of the series.  Washburn completes their second MIAA series sweep, and advance to 15-4 (6-0 MIAA).

Everything looked as if it was going to go Newman's way early on.  The Jets took an early 4-0 lead, capitalizing on some Washburn mistakes.  Zack Hargrove and Tyler Push made the noise in the bottom of the second to drive in two of those runs, Hargrove with the double and Push with a single.

Washburn then responded with a 2 RBI double from Parker Dunn, who capped off a fabulous weekend at the dish that started with 3 homeruns on Friday, in the top of the third.

In the fifth inning, Newman starter, Asher Finke, allowed 4 unearned runs.  The Ichabods were capitalizing off of two defensive miscues that led to the Jets' demise.

The Jets picked up a run in the fifth, but WU struck back adding a run in both the 7th and 8th.

In the top half of the ninth, with Ian Lecki still on the mound, the game was stopped by the umpires for a brief weather delay.  The weather was quickly moving in as it began hailing.  After about a 5 minute delay, Lecki could not be iced out as he struck out Teagan Timaya in a quick manner holding the game at 8-5.

In the home half of the ninth, the Jets could only muster a baserunner via the walk and Washburn's Charlie Kiefer earned a 4 inning save.

The Jets have now lost 3 straight and will look to buck that trend with a midweek followed by a trip to Missouri Western.

Up next for the Jets is a visit from Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Newman pummeled the Rangers in Alva back on February 9th 17-5 as the Jets rattled off 16 hits.  First pitch on Tuesday is slated for 2 PM.  For more information on everything Newman Baseball, stay tuned to newmanjets.com.
