Wilson picks up first career victory as Jets get back to winning ways

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman and Northwestern Oklahoma State played Wednesday afternoon at McCarthy Field.  The game wrapped up a home and away season series between the two teams.  After a 17-5 victory in early February, the Jets found victory again on their home field, edging out the Rangers 5-4.

Final Newman 5 NWOSU 4.

The Jets end the 3 game slide and are now 12-7 (2-4 MIAA).  NWOSU falls to a modest 9-9 (6-3 GAC).

Colby Wilson took the Hill for the Jets in the early afternoon Wednesday.  The freshman righty pitched to contact almost exclusively.  Wilson was getting pop outs and grounds and most importantly, getting them early in counts.  Wilson picked up win number one on the season, using just 57 pitches to go 5.1 innings and allowed only 1 hit and 2 walks.

The Jets bullpen came in and closed the door through 8 innings, not allowing a run and striking out three in 2.2 innings.

Newman came to the plate in the 8th looking for an insurance run when Hayden VanDePol kicked things off with a double down the right field line.  Jake Angelico came into pinch hit and laid the perfect sacrifice bunt down to advance VanDePol to third.  After Zack Hargrove was hit by a pitch a pitch, Kellan Landstad tried to give himself up.  Landstad's bunt was all too good as each runner was safe, including the all-important fifth run of the game as VanDePol slid in under the tag.

With a two run lead, the bullpen doors swung open one final time for the closer, Connor Langrell.  Langrell put got a lineout to left field then gave up two consecutive hits before striking out the next batter. The Rangers, shortstop hit a swinging bunt fielded by the pitcher, but was knocked out of the glove when trying to apply the tag between home and first.  The next batter was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases. Pitching Coach Robbie Rea paid a visit to the mound to discuss how to attack the next batter.  Langrell induced a fly ball to left center that Hayden VanDePol ran down in the left center gap to ensure a Newman victory.  Langrell earned his fourth save of the season.

Up next for the Jets is another MIAA series, this time with the Griffons of Missouri Western.  For more information on everything Newman Baseball, stay tuned to newmanjets.com.
