Big Inning Earns Big Series Win for the Jets

WICHITA – Newman took the series of Missouri Southern two games to one with an electrifying 6-4 victory over the Lions. The Jets picked up two valuable wins on the weekend as the postseason starts to take form heading into the final two weeks of the season.

Final MSSU 4 Newman 6

The Jets get to 22-18 (12-15 MIAA) with Saturday's series clinching win.  MSSU slides to 25-17 (15-12 MIAA).

Newman got 7.1 gritty innings from starting pitcher Asher Finke.  Finke struck out just 2 batters, yet limited damage as the Lions got 4 runs 3 of which earned off of 7 hits.  Finke's effort earned him his seventh win of the season.

Newman fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second as the Lions knocked one out to right field to start the scoring.

Jake Angelico got a run back for the Jets as Lincoln Choate scored off of the right fielder's sacrifice bunt.

The offense broke out of its 14 inning shell from Friday's game through the middle of game three when Carson Hawks doubled home Zack Stewart.  One batter later, Hayden VanDePol doubled in two more runs, but not to be outdone, Anthony Ferrante came up two batters later with a two RBI double of his own.  The five run sixth propelled the Jets forward in the game.

Despite two runs, one in each the seventh and eighth, all hope was lost for the Lions as the bullpen door swung open.  Ian Lecki got the Jets out of a two on, one out jam with a ground ball to first and fly out to right field.

After a one, two, three bottom of the eighth, Connor Langrell entered the game for a chance at his ninth save of the season.  They inning began with an error by Stewart, flyout, and walk.  Langrell picked up his shortstop by rolling a ground ball his way to set up a game winning double play.

Up next the Jets will be visited by the Gorillas of Pittsburg State.  Coverage will be available on The MIAA Network and Newman Jets Audio Network all series long.  For more information stay tuned to newmanjets.com.
