AUSTIN, Texas – Newman Women's Soccer travelled down to Austin for a matchup with former Heartland Conference foe and current Lone Star Conference member, St. Edward's. The Jets faced a team hungry to amend a lackluster season a year prior as the Hilltoppers jumped on the Jets early and did not look back.
FINAL Newman 0 St. Edward's 5
Newman starts the season with a loss, while St. Edward's keeps the unblemished mark. The Jets were in search of their first season opening win since the 2018 campaign where they started the year off with a 2-0 win at current MIAA member Nebraska-Kearney. Head Coach
Dylan Gruntzel was a member of the coaching staff as an assistant in a season that saw the navy and red victorious in 12 matches. Coach Gruntzel and his team will remain in search of their first win after their trip to Austin.
The Jets fall to 2-15-3 all-time against the Hilltoppers. The aggressive attack from SEU kept the Jets from recording a shot on goal. St. Edward's buried five of their staggering 17 shots on goal.
The Jets yielded 5 shots on goal in the first 7 minutes and the fifth shot at 6:29 opened the scoring for the Hilltoppers.
After a red card by defender,
Bailey Stedman, SEU added to their lead at 27:39. The result made the task even taller for the Jets facing a two goal deficit a player down.
In the second half, St. Edward's used the man-advantage to pile on three goals to widen the margin to five.
The Jets are back in action Sunday at Northwestern Oklahoma State. Just a year removed from the OT thriller that the Rangers came out on top in 2021. For everything Newman Jets download the app or visit newmanjets.com.
