Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late surge of goals keeps the Jets from knocking off #23 CSU-Pueblo

WICHITA – Newman welcomed the 23rd ranked Colorado State Pueblo Thunderwolves to Wilkins Field Saturday afternoon. The Jets stuck with Pueblo for 70 minutes before a spurt of 4 goals over 12 minutes late in the contest. CSU Pueblo earned its win 5-1 over the Jets.

Newman falls to 0-2 on the season while CSU Pueblo amends the late 2-1 defeat against #7 Fort Hays State on Thursday night. To level their record back to 1-1.

Early on it seemed like the Jets had the momentum. Newman had quality possession of the ball and countered the attacks drawn up by CSU Pueblo.

In the 11th minute, Nathan Huie scored his first career goal by intercepting an errant pass from the Thunderwolves and lofting the ball from the right side well outside the 18-yard box. The goal was Huie's first career goal as a Newman Jet.

Juan Carlos Cordovva recorded three first half saves in his season debut after sitting out of Newman's 7-1 loss Thursday.

Red cards were issued to Cedrick Price and Victor Olorunfemi after an argument between Price and a CSU Pueblo attacker. The head official intervened by drawing a red card immediately to the dismay of the Newman staff. Olorunfemi was run from the game with an immediate red card questioning the official's decision.

Playing a man down, Newman was forced to tighten up defensively. CSU Pueblo's Lamar Bynum was awarded a penalty shot as he was being held in the box on a Thunderwolve corner. Bynum evened the game at 1 at 39:44. The score remained the same headed into the half time break.

In the second half, Newman battled for the first 25 minutes, but the "bend don't break" style of play forced upon NU following the red card led to their demise.

Silky smooth ball movement and advantageous bounces allowed for CSU Pueblo to tilt the field in their favor for the final 20 minutes as the game winning goal was scored at 71:20 and three more goals were added before the final 5 minutes.

The Jets fell 5-1.

Cliff Brown and his squad will spend time in practice putting together a full 90 minutes for their next time out as they have until Sunday, September 4th for their next contest at Rockhurst. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 PM. For more news on everything Newman Jets, stay tuned to newmanjets.com or download the app.
