Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Jets drop first conference game of the season to Fort Hays State 3-1

HAYS, Kan. - The Newman Jets Men's soccer team traveled to Fort Hays State this weekend to open up conference play for the year in what turned out to be a second half slugfest.

The game started off slow as both teams were scoreless for most of the first half, with neither managing to get a shot on goal until after 20 minutes of play. The Jets put up a wall on defense with multiple key plays by their back line. Newman was able to hold on all the way until just before halftime when FHSU's Segun Idowu was able to score in the 44th minute giving them a 1-0 lead before halftime.

Coming out of halftime, FHSU kicked off a flurry of goals by both teams as they strengthened their lead with a header scored by Haruya Iwasaki in the 59th minute. Newman didn't wait long to answer as team captain Carlos Bellosta Manchon found the back of the net just two minutes later. FHSU was able to to sneak one in directly after however, as they brought their lead back to two in the 62nd minute.

Despite multiple close chances, neither Newman or FHSU was able to score again for the rest of the game, ending it with a score of 3-1 in FHSU's favor. This was the first in what should be a long and competitive season of conference play for the Jets, who will be looking to get back on track as they host Harding this Thursday, September 22nd at 7PM.
