SHAWNEE, Okla. – Newman Volleyball began their play in the OBU fall Tournament today with games against St. Edwards and OBU, taking their first game against the Hilltoppers 3-1 and falling 2-3 to the Bison to end day 1 of the tournament.
Game 1
The Newman Jets women's volleyball team continued their hot start to the season with another win to kick off OBU fall tournament play. The Jets started their morning off by putting up a 3-1 victory against a winless St. Edwards team.
A close first set saw the Jets winning by 4 points with a score of 25-21. After dropping the second set to the Hilltoppers 15-25, the Jets fought back to take sets 3 and 4 both by a score of 25-23.
Newman had three players reach double digit kills this game, with Riley Daugherty leading the way with 13, followed by Abby Borough and Ozioma Ajekwu who both had twelve.
After a prime start to their tournament play, the Jets next had to take on the hosting OBU Bison team for a chance to improve their record further.
Game 2
Game 2 was taken all the way to the 5th set in a tough close out game for the day between the Jets and the Bison. The match was competitive all the way through, with Newman and OBU trading sets back and forth.
The Jets dropped the first set 23-25, but came back to win the next one 25-19. After losing the third set 19-25, Newman then rallied to a 25-23 set win to push the game into a 5th set.
OBU proceeded to take the last set and the game by a score of 11-15, pushing Newman to a 1-1 record in the tournament and a 4-2 record for the season.
The Jets again had three players reach double digit kills, this time led by Salome Romp with 17, followed by Riley Daugherty with 14 while adding 21 digs and Abby Borough with 11. Natalie Morales showed up in a big way as well, notching 34 digs over the course of the game.
The Jets will be looking for a return to form Saturday with games against UT Tyler and Arkansas Tech.
