JOPLIN, Mo. - The Jets Women's soccer team went on the road Friday to start their weekend as they played Missouri Southern. Both Teams went into the game looking for their first win of the season, but Newman would be especially hungry for that win after a draw and one point loss last weekend. MSSU would take the game 4-0, leaving Newman with a 0-8-1 record on the season and remaining winless in conference play.
NU would come under fire from the very beginning, with MSSU going on the attack and forcing multiple corner kicks to apply the pressure early on. MSSU would go on to break through in the 16th minute with a low shot from Ashley Koepp to take a 1-0 lead. Newman wasn't discouraged by this though, as they found their footing in the midfield and began to drive the ball down field resulting in a high arching shot from Sophomore
Makenzie Shay that was saved by MSSU keeper Lilly Doneghue . After some stout defending from more attacking runs, the last 15 minutes of the half would see a back and forth battle with both teams trading shots until halftime. The Jets would see multiple attacking chances, including a corner kick opportunity, but were unable to capitalize on any of them before the end of the first half.
With MSSU holding the advantage in shots going into halftime, Newman would look to change things up as they came out even more aggressive in the second half and pushed the ball downfield to put up a pair of shots in the 50th minute from Junior
Tate Cuffy and Sophomore
Jalyn McClean, one of the Jets leading goal scorers this season. They would continue the early second half aggression as they found another pair of opportunities just 5 minutes later, but it was MSSU who would be able to capitalize, as they pushed downfield on the counterattack and scored again, upping their lead up to 2. This would unfortunately be the story for the rest of the night, as despite Newman's best efforts, they would score twice more under similar circumstances and end the game up 4-0.
The Jets continue their search for the first win of their season later this weekend as they stay on the road to play Central Missouri this Sunday September 25th at 1PM.
