WICHITA – The #6 Washburn Ichabods rolled into Wichita, Kansas Friday night coming off of back to back losses and faced a young Newman Jets team that was focused to get back on track and upset a Washburn team that's gotten the best of the Jets in recent matches.
Game Recap
The Jets held their own tonight and it showed early as Newman had #6 Washburn playing from behind as the Ichabods looked like they were going to fall in the first set for only the third time this season. NU jumped out to an early 6-3 lead with
Salome Romp and
Abby Borough getting the best of WU. Romp finished the first set with 4 kills and ended the match with 15, a team high on the night. Washburn looked for answers to counter the Jets but struggled midway through the set before a kill by Austin Broadie capped off a 6-2 to give WU their first lead of the match at 1817. A Washburn 4-0 run late into the set gave them enough room to pull away as another Austin Broadie kill ended the set and gave WU a 25-21 set victory.
Set 2 showcased how well both of these two teams competed tonight. An 8-2 run in set 2 gave the Jets their biggest lead of the night as NU looked to be in control with a 12-6 lead. That lead was quickly chopped down as Washburn countered that with a 4-0 off back to back kills and 2 attack errors by Newman. Off a Jets timeout
Riley Daugherty and
Ozioma Ajekwu ended the run with a kill a piece. WU again showed why they are a top 10 team as they found their groove and scored 6 unanswered points to take the lead 19-17 in a battle of a set. No team showed any signs of quitting as a quick NU 3-0 run gave them an opportunity to take a set from the Ichabods as they were 1 point away from tying the match at a set a piece before Halle Meister scored 2 of the next 3 points to give Washburn the set 2 victory.
Set 3 was different than the prior 2. Washburn came into the 3
rd set with the momentum shifted their way and sprung out to an 8-2 lead, pushing the Jets to rebound and overcome a huge Ichabod lead and avoid a sweep on home court. The Jets fought their way back to make it an 18-17 set but the Ichabods took control and finished the set on a 7-3 run to take the 3
rd and final set 25-20.
