Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Jets back on track as Newman stings Emporia State at home

WICHITA –  3 different Jets finished the match with double digit kills and 5 players finished with double digit digs to help the Jets get back into the win column and put momentum on their side going into Tuesday's match with Southern Nazarene.

Newman ends a 4 game losing streak and moves to 7-8 on the season, 2-4 in MIAA play while Emporia State falls to 4-11 and 1-5 in MIAA play. The Jets extend their win streak vs the Hornets to 4 as Riley Daugherty led the way for the Jets with 16 kills while Ozioma Ajekwu finished the game with 6 blocks.

Emporia State didn't make it easy for the Jets as they were poised to sneak a win by Newman after coming off a 1-sided match in which they lost to Central Oklahoma in straight sets the night before. ESU took a close set 1 25-23 after Leah Mach recorded the final 2 points for the Hornets, finishing the match with a team high 13 kills.

Set 2 finished with the same score but with a different victor as Newman came away on top. It looked as if the set might have started to slip away from the Jets with ESU going on a 4-0 scoring run and taking a 15-14 lead but NU countered with a quick run of their own, giving them a lead that they held onto the rest of the set. Abby Borough had 5 of her 12 kills in this set and came up clutch in big moments for the Jets.

Newman seemed to have found their rhythm moving into set 3 as they dominated all set and jumped out to a big lead early. Emporia State struck back, making it close at 13-9 but the Jets stung back with an 8-0 run that took the life out of the Hornets for the remainder of the third set. NU finished on a 12-3 run as Emporia State couldn't find a groove and had attack errors in 6 of the Jets 8 points during the run.

The magic number of the day for the Jets was 8. Newman stopped a 5-0 Hornets run with another 8-0 run that saw NU take back the lead that they did not give back for the rest of the set. They pushed another run on the Hornets that ended up being the final nail in the coffin as it gave Newman a 21-14 lead before kills by Ajekwu and Daugherty ended the set and gave the match victory to Newman.

"Our team did a good job of responding after the first set. The next three sets I thought we did a better job of earning our points and making them work to earn their points." Head Coach Marisa Compton said of her team's play today. The Jets recovered after a back and forth 1st set. "McKinzie and Natalie Morales did a great job defensively today. I'm proud of Kinzie because that is something she has worked on this season is playing defense first." Morales finished the match with 15 digs. "Offensively, Abby came up big for us in moments of today's match."

The lone Senior from Topeka, Kansas finished the match hitting .440, going 12-25 on the day in attacks.
