WICHITA - The Jets Men's soccer team continued their weekend stay at home Saturday afternoon when they hosted the Ouachita Baptist Tigers at Wilkins field. Both teams would be looking to notch their first win of the season after a series of losses and draws. Ouachita would end up taking the game from Newman after they loaded the second half with 3 goals to win 3-1. The Jets fall to 0-8-1 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
First half
The game started off with a lot of back and forth play and some early attacking action for the Jets as team captain Carlos Bellosta Manchon fired the opening shot 11 minutes in, just barely missing and hitting the right post. Along with Manchon, Newman winger Felix Tellez Ramirez would continue to pester the Ouachita backline all game with a fast and aggressive attacking strategy.
That aggressive play style would pay off, as Ramirez was fouled in the box and capitalized on the penalty kick, scoring and giving Newman a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. Ramirez would also lead the Jets in shots on goal this game. Ouachita would attempt to level things up shortly after with a shot from Ebon Jordon, but would find no success before the whistle blew ending the first half of play.
Second Half
The second half would be a rough start for the Jets, as Ouachita finally answered back with a penalty shot of their own, taken by Midfielder Bobby Boone just 3 minutes into the half. Newman would go on the attack for the next 10 minutes of play as they put up another shot on goal in the 58th minute to try and regain their lead, but would be unable to find the back of the net for the rest of the game.
Ouachita's Ebon Jordon showed up for them again in the 64th minute as he made a run deep into the box and scored to give them the 2-1 lead. Jordon would score again with a header for them 17 minutes later, as Johar Ghuneim sent him the cross for an assist, pushing their lead to 3-1. The Jet's would attempt to fight their way back into the game, but would come up short and the second half ended with a 3-1 loss for them.
Next up
Newman's next game will be this Thursday, September 29th at 7PM when they host a 4-1-1 Northeastern State for another home game as they continue the search for their first win of the season.
