Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball returns home in loss to Gorillas

Jets keep it tight in second set

WICHITA, KS. - Volleyball returned for only their third home match as far this season in a losing effort to the Pittsburg State Gorillas.

The Jets were coming off two tough road losses, and were hoping to turn around their fortunes at home.

The Gorillas dominated the early portions of the first set, scoring the first four points of the match. But the Jets had other plans in mind, going on one of their most lengthy runs of the season, coming back from a 6 point deficit to tie the game at 9.

Pitt State would again attempt to run away with the game, but the Jets kept them in check keeping within touching distance of a set win. Despite the strong effort from Newman, the Gorillas would take the final six points of the set to win 25-17.

The second set saw both teams going back and forth, with many lead changes happening through the set. The Jets were never down more than two through most of the set, and a kill from Avery Dempsey put the Jets in a good position to win their first set of the season. Once again, the Gorillas were able to sneak by and win 25-21.

The third set was the most lopsided of the night, even though the Jets would respond multiple times after going down. It was a little too late for Newman, as they struggled as the Gorillas grip on the match got tighter. Newman would drop the third, 25-13.

Ozioma Ajekwu led the Jets with 14 kills, while Dempsey added 14 assists.

Newman will return home tomorrow, hosting Northwest Missouri State at 6 PM and will have two more matches in the coming days.
