WICHITA - Emotions filled the brisk air prior to Friday night's 7 PM kickoff as eight seniors were recognized for their years of dedication and hard work in a pregame ceremony. After the Senior Day festivities, the Jets and RiverHawks battled in the final home game for Newman in 2023.
Play was up and down early as both teams traded chances. Newman 2-14-1 (1-9-0Â MIAA) and Northeastern State 6-7-4 (4-6-1 MIAA) spent much of the first 15 minutes feeling each other out.
Josie Jarvis of NSU opened the scoring sheet with a chip shot that bested Newman Goalkeeper,
Jordan Webster. From the 19th minute forward, the RiverHawks continued to press forward against a stiff Jet back line.
NSU would tally one more in the first half with a 33rd minute goal from Whitney Gentry. Gentry later found the back of the net from a Jet turnover to put the RiverHawks ahead 3-0 in the second half.
Newman's offensive efforts were not rewarded with a goal, despite forcing NSU GK Rebecca Patryka to make two saves and numerous other shots nearly missing the frame.
Senior,
Jordan Webster finished the evening with 5 saves. The Muskogee, Oklahoma native has stopped at least 5 shots in eight consecutive games.
The eight seniors recognized included
Nicole Anderson, Yaya Puentes,
Jordan Webster,
Madi Minks,
Marta Aranda,
Tate Cuffy,
Alexandra Dan, and
Nayeli Reveles.
Newman will conclude regular season play on the road against Central Oklahoma. Kickoff for Sunday, October 29th is slated for 1 PM.
