JOPLIN, MO. - Volleyball continued another long road trek as they took on the Missouri Southern Lions on Friday. The game was lopsided from the start as the Jets tried to muster any offense they could, but were unable to prevail.
The Jets had a solid offensive performance the night before, taking Central Missouri to the limit in the third set. It took the Jennies an extra effort to get the win.
The Jets once again struggled to put lengthy scoring runs together in the first set, never managing to score more than two points in a row.
Ozioma Ajekwu and Makena Reinert continued to be the main source of inspiration for the Jets offense, but could not quite get to the high level they had played at the night before.
Two kills from
Lily Hilgenfeld helped put the Jets up 8-4 in the second set when Newman was in the midst of a 4-0 scoring run. The Lions retook control of the lead, but the Jets continued to give everything they had, coming just a point shy of a tie in the middle of the set. The Lions continued to put the pressure on and took the closest set of the night, 25-17.
Missouri Southern started the third with six straight points before Newman could respond. The closest the Jets could narrow the advantage was 8 points. MSSU took the third and final set, 25-10.
Reinert led the Jets in kills for the second straight game with 6, while
Avery Dempsey provided 14 assists and
Natalie Morales had 16 digs.
The Jets will have a non conference match at Southern Nazarene on Monday at 6 PM, and will then have two more road conference matches before returning home.
