DALLAS, TX. - The Men's and Women's Cross Country teams had a fantastic end to the regular season on Saturday morning, as multiple personal records were achieved at the Old Glory Gallup.
Patricia Limo had finished in first place at the Muthama-Rogers Invite last month, and followed it up with another great race, finishing third in the Women's 5k with a time of 17 minutes and 37 seconds. She was less than 20 seconds off of the first place finisher. The record had previously stood for almost a decade for Newman, with Hall of Famer Rubi Torres previously holding the record of 17 minutes and 59 seconds. Torres was inducted into the Newman Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.
"It was probably the greatest performance for a Newman runner as far as time goes that I have seen in 23 years as head coach" said Head Cross Country Coach
Josh Schepis.
Lucy Brown and
Nayelly Rosales had top half finishes in a race featuring over 285 women. Both women had personal bests in the race.
The women would have an overall finish of 17th place, finishing above MIAA rivals Central Oklahoma.
Asher Brown was the top finisher for the men, who ran a personal best time of 25 minutes and 17 seconds as he finished 34th overall.
Kevin Chemalmal,
Jake Beauchamp,
Logan Libel, and
Hunter Lough all had personal best times as the Jets would finish in 12th place.
"It's was great tuneup for our conference meet in 2 weeks" said Schepis. "We are running with a lot of confidence and hopefully we can improve on our previous performances."
The men and women will compete at the MIAA Championships in two weeks, with the event being held in Columbia, Missouri.
