Jets dominate Falcons in the paint

Somerhalder scores most points of career in win

WICHITA - The Jets welcomed the reigning NCCAA National Champions to Fugate on Thursday night, in what turned out to be the Jets second victory at home so far this season.

The Jets were coming off a 1-1 opening weekend, with the navy and red picking up a late victory against Concordia St. Paul.

Newman never trailed during the game, although there were times that the Falcons gave the Jets some trouble.

The paint points were the critical factor in the game, with the Jets scoring 26 in the first half alone. Newman used several different rotations throughout the game, that saw some big minutes from freshmen Sean Yu and Zach Spitzer

The Falcons would get to within four points following a dominant opening 10 minutes from Newman, but several layups from Sam Sommerhalder and a three from Stevie Smith put the Jets back into a comfortable position the rest of the way.

Smith would be one of the Jets leading scorers with 17 points tonight, as he and Somerhalder led the way to a Jets victory.

Despite good three point shooting last week, the Jets were only able to score 5, with Jacob Joe and Stevie Strong both getting two.

Five Jets scored in double digits tonight, with three of them being starters in tonight's game.

The Jets move to 2-0 all time against the Falcons with the 86-71 victory.

Newman will head on the road for the only time in the non-conference slate on Saturday, taking on a tough William Jewell team at 3 pm.
