Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Fisher-Brown's buzzer beater secures first conference win of the season

First victory over Mules since 2020

WICHITA - In what was a surprisingly defensive slugfest, men's basketball picked up their first MIAA win of the season against Central Missouri.

The Jets had not beaten the Mules since their first year of joining the MIAA in 2019-20 season.

The Jets went up early and looked like they might run away with the game, but the Mules slowly got their way back into the proceedings.

The game was low scoring all around, as both teams had put up big points to open the year. It was all level at 25 when both teams went into the halftime break. It was the least amount of points that Newman had allowed in a half all season.

The Jets would be able to go up by 6 several times in the second half, but it again was not enough to put away UCM.

The mules would retake the lead, but good defensive stands from the Jets always kept them within a few points of retaking the lead.

A three from freshman Kaeson Fisher-Brown gave the Jets another narrow advantage with just a few minutes left, but the Mules remained tenacious and after trading leads several times, looked like they would steal one in Wichita, after the Jets fouled with just 4 seconds left.

Following a time out, the Jets had no time for error. They quickly get it down the court and with less than a second left, Fisher-Brown hit a three for the win at the buzzer. The crowd was sent into a frenzy at what they had just seen.

The Jets move to 1-1 in the MIAA and improve to 4-3 on the season.

Newman will be on the road for the next two games, as they take on Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern next week.
