WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Wrestling competed in their final MIAA matchup of the season in Waarensburg on Monday night, taking on UCM.
The Jets had their best MIAA performance of the season and put themselves in position to leave the Multipurpose Building with a win late into the matchup with the Mules.
Dylan Sheler opened things up in the 125 weight class and gave the Jets a 6-0 lead when he pinned UCM's John Nguyen at 4:57. Sheler dominated the entire match.
The Mules would tie it up in the 133 with class with a fall at 2:22 but Newman would jump back out to a 6 point lead as UCM was open in the 141 weight class.
The #10 wrestler in the country, Darrick Lapaglia used his experience to win by fall in 51 seconds at the 149 weight class to even the score, but
Jace Fisher rebounded the Jets and stood tall in his match against Central Missouri's JD Culp, earning a major decision victory to put the Jets up by 4.
UCM got 3 back with a major decision win in the 165 weight class but
JD Johnson put the Jets up by 19-16 with a 3-1 decision over Austin Morgan.
Johnson's win would be the last win of the night for Newman as UCM won the 184 weight class due to an NU open before taking the 197 match by decision 9-3.
Caleb Wunsch battled it out and came close to coming out on top but the Mules got the final blow to take a 25-19 lead.
De'Leon Freeman would fall to Trent Strong by a 7-1 decision to give UCM the 28-19 win on their senior day.
