Beavers strike last in offensive home opener

WICHITA - Newman and Minot State began a 4 game series beginning with their home opener on Friday afternoon which saw a combined 28 runs scored in an 18-10 loss for Newman. The Beavers used a 7 run 8th inning and tacked on 4 more in the 9th in route to the 8 run victory. Minot State looked as if they were going to put the Jets away early, scoring 6 runs in the first 4 innings, 2 being off home runs. Newman answered the call in the 4th and 5th innings. Hayden Vandepol hit sacrifice fly and scored Carson Hawks to get NU it's first run of the game, seemingly opening the flood gates as the Jets turned a 6-0 ball game into a 7-7 game after putting together a 5 run 5th inning. Jake Angelico and Jason Schneider hit back to back home runs to start the rally, Jenner Steele singled to left field and advanced to second on a fly out to center. That would lead to Minot State walking the next 2 batters to load the bases and giving the Jets a big opportunity to tie or take the lead with one swing. Hayden Vandepol earned an RBI on a fielders choice to make it 7-5, then Jack Kiser singled to score Zach Stewart. Eli Wohl tied the game with another single to left field to make it a brand new ball game heading into the 6th. Newman shut down Minot State in the 6th and 7th and gave themselves an opportunity in the bottom of the 7th to be in position to get the home opening win. Dalton Smith walked to begin the inning and reached second base on a Vandepol sacrifice, then to third before the Jets safety squeezed him in with Eli Wohl's bunt getting the Jets their first lead of the game. The lead would be short lived. Minot State scored 7 runs in the 8th inning and seemingly slammed the door shut when MSU's Kary hit a 3 run home run to right field to extend the lead to 4 before adding on 3 more. The Beavers had 6 hits in the inning. Newman got 2 runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a wild pitch and a home run by Carson Hawks, but the Beavers scored 4 more in the top of the ninth and shut the Jets out in the bottom half to win the game 18-10. Parkhurst got the win for the Beavers, Prieve was given the loss for the Jets. Newman and Minot State go back at it again tomorrow in a doubleheader scheduled for 12 PM before finishing out the series on Sunday.
