WICHITA - Jets baseball split the day with Minot State, winning game 1 in extra innings and falling in game 2 to the Beavers.
Game 1
Newman and MSU were scheduled for two 7 inning games but 7 wouldn't be enough in game 1 as the Jets would rally and walk it off in extra innings in another highly offensive game to salvage their game one loss, 12-11.
Minot State capitalized in the first inning off an error, 3 walks, and a hit by pitch and string together 6 runs. It set the tone for what would be another high scoring game in which the Jets have been no stranger to this season.
Jake Angelico hit his 3rd home run of the season to begin the bottom half of the first. Minot would makeup that run by playing their 7th in 2 innings but the Jets would cut into the deficit to make it 7-5 after the 2nd due to a
Cullen Glosson 2 run home run and Angelico's 2nd home run in as many innings.
Angelico's 2 home runs in the game put him in the team lead with 4 on the season.
Newman wouldn't score again until the bottom of the 5th inning. Down 9-5,
Jason Schneider reach first second on a throwing error by the shortstop which set up
Jenner Steele to bring him in with an RBI base hit to center field. The pitching staff would keep the deficit at 3 and the bats started to warmup for Newman who scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the 6th as Angelico kept hot and tripled to bring in Glosson and would score the next at bat when Schneider would single to right field.
Ian Lecke came into the top of the 7th with the task of keeping the Beavers lead at 1. The senior would get two fly outs and strike out MSU's Kay to end the inning.
Zach Stewart's 3rd home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the 7th brought the house down, tying the game with Newman set up to win the game, however the Beavers got the next 3 batters out and put up 2 runs in the top of the 8th to take a 2 run lead.
Newman was down but not out. Minot State couldn't put away the Jets.
Eli Wohl walked to lead off the inning, Angelico was hit by a pitch and then both advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch and NU would then have the bases loaded with 1 out after
Hayden Vandepol walked.
Carson Hawks was then hit by a pitch to bring in a run. The Beavers couldn't find the zone as they'd walk the next batter to tie the game.
Dalton Smith would win the game the next at bat with a single to left center, scoring Vandepol to give the Jets the win in walkoff fashion.
Ian Lecke (1-0) earned the win for Newman. Angelico led the offense with 3 hits and 4 RBI's to continue his impressive season.
Jenner Steele added 3 hits and an RBI.
Game 2
The bats would cool off in game 2 for Newman as they'd only string together one hit.
Jenner Steele's home run in the 2nd inning brought in the lone run and hit for the Jets.
Minot State's offense proved to be too much in game 2, racking up 18 hits and scoring 16 runs in route to the 15 run victory.
Newman will look to split the 4 game series with Minot State tomorrow when the teams return to action at McCarthy Field for a 1 PM start.
