Jenner Steele blasts 2 home runs, Shawn Marquis has a 4 hit day in 12-9 victory over Southwestern College

WICHITA- Baseball overcame a 5-0 first inning deficit vs Southwestern College on Tuesday afternoon behind 17 hits led by Shawn Marquis and Jenner Steele. The Moundbuilders capitalized off 5 walks and 2 hits in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. Shawn Marquis got things going for Newman with a bunt for a hit that caused a throwing error leading to Marquis reaching 2nd base. Jenner Steele would hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the Jets first run of the game. Marquis would finish the game with 4 hits and Jenner Steele would have 4 RBI's in the game off his sacrifice fly and 2 home runs. Steele has been unstoppable as of late, batting .486 with 5 long balls on the early season. Marquis would lead get his 2nd hit of the game with a 2 run home run in the 2nd inning that scored Jack Kiser. Newman's pitching staff cooled off Southwestern in the third inning to swing momentum to the Newman dugout who would score 5 unanswered runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Jenner Steele and Trevor Pacheco hit back to back home runs to tie the game and Hayden Vandepol scored on an Anthony Ferrante single after singling and advancing to 2nd. Ferrante scored a few pitches later when Joe Kinneberg put one into left field. Jake Angelico continued to be a force in the Newman offense with runners on base, knocking in a pair of runs with a single to center field to put the Jets up by 3. The Moundbuilders tied things in the top of the 4th but Pacheco and Vandepol took the lead back with back to back doubles. Newman would keep the lead the rest of the way. The Jets added 3 more in the bottom of the 5th. Angelico scored Kiser and Steele would knock his 2nd one out of the park to score himself and Marquis to plate their final runs of the afternoon. Blake Mitchell, Jaret Granger, and Lance Elsen would hold Southwestern to 1 run the rest of the way and Andrew Prieve would pick up his first save of the season after striking out the side in the 9th. The Jets improve to 4-6 and face a familiar foe in Rogers State in a 3 game conference series beginning Friday.
