WICHITA – Newman defeated #21 Rogers State for a second time this weekend as the Jets won their first series in MIAA play this season. There were only two runs scored in the first game which the Jets won. And while the colder weather may have hampered the offense yesterday, the action heated up between both teams today.
The Hillcats went up 3-0 in the top of the first after not scoring a single run and recording only three hits on Friday.
The Jets would respond quickly in the bottom of the inning. Jake Angleico's double brought Shawn Marquis home to start the scoring for Newman. Another home run by short stop Zack Stewart brought three more runs home. The home run was Stewart's fifth of the season and his second this weekend. Newman led 4-3 at the end of the first.
Rogers State would again take the lead in the top of the second. Scoring three more runs in the inning including one off a throwing error, with the score at 6-4 in favor of the Hillcats.
Another hit from Angelico brought another two runners home for the Jets in the bottom of the second. A home run from Jason Schneider gave Newman a three run lead, and one they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
Rogers State would get a run back in the third inning to bring them within two, but more strong hitting from Jenner Steele and Schneider extended the lead by four, with the score at 11-7 after four innings.
A Hillcats home run in the sixth brought them within two once again, but the Jets continued their strong offense, adding four more runs. The Jets scored twice in both the bottom of the sixth and eighth to win the game with a score of 14-9.
Pitching for the Jets was Asher Finke, who earned his first win of the season. Finke recorded seven strikeouts through five innings on the mound. Colby Wilson and Andrew Prieve also saw action for the Jets, each pitching two innings.
The Jets will go for the sweep tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 11:30 AM.
