Jets use big 5th inning to fly past Crimson Storm in Opening Day win

Zack Stewart's grand slam in the 5th inning helps lift NU over SNU to earn first Opening Day victory since 2016.

BETHANY, OK - Opening Day officially was upon Newman Jets Baseball and while the temperatures in Bethany, Oklahoma sat around the low 50's, the Jets bats were hot in what ended up being a 14 hit game for the men in navy blue as 8 different Jets made their way into the hit column in a 14-7 win over Southern Nazarene. Anthony Ferrante earned the first Newman hit and RBI of the season in the top of the 2nd when he brought in Zack Stewart with a double to right center. Garrett VanDeventer held SNU scoreless the first 2 innings before the Crimson Storm struck back in the bottom half of the third off Atten's 2 run homer to left field. Newman answered the next inning with Ferrante's 2nd RBI of the game in as many at bats when Jason Schneider scored on his sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. SNU strung together 4 hits in the bottom of the 4th, but scored 2 of their 3 runs in the inning off a throwing error on an attempted double play with the bases loaded. VanDeventer escaped out of the inning leaving 1 runner on base. The onslaught was on for Newman in the 5th inning. Everything that could go wrong for SNU would go wrong in the inning. The Jets, poised to earn their first Opening Day victory since 2016 racked together 7 hits and 9 runs to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Eli Wohl got things going with a single up the middle then stole second base. Shawn Marquis walked. Jake Angelico reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher on a bunt attempt which led to both Wohl and Marquis scoring on the play. Jason Schneider walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at 5-5. Zack Stewart had the biggest hit of the game, hitting a grand slam to right center to give the Jets the 9-5 lead. NU would add 3 more runs in the top of the 6th off a Marquis RBI single and Angelico's RBI single that would plate 2 Jets runs. Justin Durnil escaped a bases loaded jam in the 9th inning, getting SNU's Edmonds to line out to left field to end the game and secure Newman an Opening Day victory.

Newman outhit SNU 14-12. The Jets pitching staff struckout 12 Crimson Storm batters.

VanDeventer gets the win in his first outing of the season while Hine gets the loss for SNU. The Jets will look to win the series tomorrow when they return to Feland Field for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM.
