Game Recap: Baseball |

Jets play small ball to cause 10 MWSU errors in 15-5 mercy rule

WICHITA – Baseball won its third straight game this week, defeating Missouri Western in the Jets second MIAA series at home this season. In the Jets two previous games, they reached the run rule against Central Christian and Northwestern Oklahoma State, defeating both teams by a ten run margin. It would be a third time this week the Jets would win by this margin.

Missouri Western took a one run lead at the top of the first, but would never be able to retake the lead the rest of the game.

Newman would take the lead in the bottom of the inning. Shawn Marquis scored the first of two unearned runs for the Jets, after Jenner Steele would reach first following an error by the short stop. Jake Angelico would score the second run after a wild pitch to put the Jets up 2-1.

The Jets used a bunt parade where almost half the lineup seemed to bunt and cause the Griffons to struggle on the defensive side. MWSU reached the double digit error column, the most in a game this season in the MIAA.

After yet another error by the Griffins in the bottom of the second, Anthony Ferrante would score a third unearned run for the Jets after Eli Wohl's single led to an error by the third baseman. Jack Kiser and Wohl would add two more runs in the inning to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Jets would score an additional seven runs that were ruled as unearned after multiple errors from Missouri Western. Zack Stewart, Jason Schneider, Hayden Vandepol, Anthony Ferrante, Eli Wohl and Shawn Marquis would all reach home from errors from the Griffins, with the scoring extended to 11-1.

Missouri Western would get two runs back in the top of the fourth, both of which were ruled unearned with the score at 11-3.

Hayden Vandepol would score his second run of the day in the bottom of the fourth after Jack Kiser flied out to right field. Jenner Steele would also score his second run in the bottom of the fifth after Jenner Steele grounded to third.

The Griffins would get two runs back in the top of the sixth, but the Jets would keep scoring. The Jets added two runs to end the game in the bottom of the seventh with the final score of 15-5.

Garrett VanDeventer would record his third win on the season. VanDeventer would pitch six innings and recorded three strikeouts, ending with nearly 100 pitches. Ian Lecki also saw action in one inning today, putting together two strikeouts.

The Jets have now won six out of their last 7 games at home and improved their record to 9-12. The second game is slated for 2 PM tomorrow, followed by the series finale on Sunday at 1 PM.
