VanDePol sparks offense, VanDeventer goes 8 innings strong in 5-1 win over Central Oklahoma

WICHITA - Newman baseball dominated Central Oklahoma Friday afternoon behind 8 strong innings from Garrett VanDeventer who gave up just 1 run to improve to 4-2 on the season while Newman improved to 12-16 (6-8 MIAA) with a 5-1 win.

The Jets offense outhit the Bronchos 8-4 in route to the win. Newman outplayed UCO all game.

VanDePol's triple got the Jets on the board when UCO's Wood dove for a ball in right center but came up short. Zack Stewart scored to put Newman up 1-0 and VanDePol would score the very next at bat when Anthony Ferrante grounded out to the short stop.

Central Oklahoma got a run back in the 5th but wouldn't score the rest of the game. Their offense struggled and only managed to get one more hit that would come in the 9th.

VanDePol led off the 5th with his second triple of the game and scored the next at bat when Ferrante doubled down the left field line. Shawn Marquis doubled down the right field line later in the inning and scored Ferrnate to extend the lead to 4-1. The Bronchos pitching staff would hold the Jets scoreless for the next 2 innings.

Up 4-1 in the bottom of the 8th the Bronchos would struggle defensively. Jake Angelico reached 1st base on an error by the first basemen then would steal 2nd base  and advance to third on a groundout. Jason Schneider walked and got the attention of the pitcher who then tried to pick Schneider off at 1st base. Luckily for the Jets nobody covered first and the ball went down the right field line to score Angelico and give the Jets the needed insurance run.

Garrett VanDeventer dominated the Bronchos hitters, giving up only 3 hits while striking out 6 batters. Andrew Prieve relieved VanDeventer in the 9th and kept the Bronchos off the board and give Newman the 5-1 win.

Hayden VanDePol supplied the Jets with clutch hitting. He reached base 3 times in the win.

"After the UCM series my swing was feeling a little broken so I went swinging in the cage and got my hands up a little bit so I'd feel more natural sitting on the fast ball," VanDePol said.

The Jets played great baseball all around. "Obviously when Garrett is on the mound we have a lot of trust, the same with all of our pitchers and it's our job to go out there and hit, and we all did our job on all sides today," VanDePol said of the teams performance today.

The Jets win moves them 6-5 all time vs UCO and gives Newman the first 3 game win streak in the series history.

The Jets and Bronchos continue the series tomorrow at McCarthy Field. First pitch is set for 2 PM.
