TOPEKA, Kan. - Baseball ended the weekend playing in their 2nd of a 3 game conference series vs Washburn. The Jets fell in on a walk-off base hit yesterday and was looking to snap a 4 game losing streak heading into today's game.
Newman got the first run of the game in the third inning off a
Jake Angelico sacrifice fly, scoring
Eli Wohl. Washburn would score 5 unanswered runs the very next half inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Ichabods took advantage of walks and 2 errors in the inning.
Newman would score 3 runs in the top of the 5th.
Shawn Marquis walked and scored on a wild pitch, and Angelico would score on a
Zack Stewart fielders choice. The final run of the inning came when
Hayden Vandepol hit a sacrifice fly to being in Jacob Schneider.
The run scoring didn't stop for the Jets. The men in baby blue scored 7 more runs in the top of the 6th off 5 hits.
Shawn Marquis doubled to score
Jack Kiser, Schneider hit an infield single that scored Marquis, Vandepol and Kiser both would single to score 2 runners each and
Eli Wohl would double down to right field to score Kiser and
Anthony Ferrante.
Washburn would then take control of the game and use costly Jet walks and errors to take advantage and come up clutch in big hitting situations the rest of the way. The Ichabods scored 14 unanswered runs the next 2 innings to come away with a 19-12 victory.
Newman will try and avoid the sweep tomorrow as they look for their first win in 5 games and first win in Topeka since 2021.
