Baseball drops game three to MSSU

JOPLIN, Mo. - Missouri Southern earned the 3 game sweep Sunday afternoon, edging Newman in an offensive battle 16-12. The Jets offensive had seven players combine for eleven hits. NU and MSSU flipped the script from the last two games, this time being the Lions who scored first. The Lions put up four 1st inning runs. Newman answered back, scoring six runs over the next two innings. Hayden VanDePol got the Jets their first run of the game with a bases loaded walk. Eli Wohl reached base in a throwing error that scored two runners to make it 3-4 after two innings. The Jets started to barrel the ball up in the 3rd inning. Zack Stewart doubled to score Jenner Steele to tie the game. Joe Kinneberg continued to hit the ball well, hitting a two run home run to give the Jets a 6-4 lead. The No. 17 Lions scored ten unanswered runs over the next three innings to have a 14-6 lead. The Jets would rally back to a two run deficit the next three innings. In the 6th inning Jenner singled to score Wohl and would later score on an RBI groundout from Zack Stewart. In the 7th inning, Eli Wohl hit his 4th home run of the season, a three run shot that brought the game to within three runs. An inning later, Joe Kinneberg hit his 2nd home run of the game, and 7th hit in the last two games to make it a 12-14 game. Southern would hit a two run home run to extend their lead back to four runs. The insurance runs hurt the Jets as they wouldn't score any further, giving MSSU the three game sweep. The loss puts Newman at 19-24 and 11-16 in MIAA play. They will host Oklahoma Baptist in their final home game of the season on Wednesday afternoon.
