PITTSBURG, Kans. - In front of a crowd of 150 people, Newman stunned the 29 win Gorillas after falling behind early in the game 4-0. Home runs made the difference in the one run win.
Garrett VanDeventer moved to 6-4 on the season. After giving up four runs in the first three innings, VanDeventer settled in and allowed just two hits the rest of his outing. Garrett threw seven innings and struck out two batters, setting up
Andrew Prieve for the two inning save.
Zack Stewart got Newman on the board in the 4th inning. He homered down the right field line to make it a 1-4 game.
Jake Angelico singled in the 5th inning, but a throwing error by the second basemen gave NU a run to make a two run deficit. The very next at bat,
Jenner Steele hit a three run home run to give Newman a 5-4 lead.
With the Jets turning a momentum killing inning ending double play for the Gorillas to end the 7th, Steele then gave Prieve a three run cushion in the eighth inning. Steele hit his 2nd home run of the game and team leading 17th of the season over the right center field wall for a two run home run. He finished the game with three RBI's, all coming off his two home runs.
The pressure was on in the 9th inning for the Jets. Up three runs, Pitt State led off with a home run, then with one out hit a sacrifice fly with bases loaded to make it a one run game. With the Gorillas down to their final out, Prieve struck out the batter swinging to end the game.
The win moves Newman to 6th place in the MIAA standings, and gives the Jets their 6th win over the Gorillas in program history. NU is now 20-25 overall and 13-16 in the MIAA.
Newman and Pitt State will play game two tomorrow at 1 PM.
