PITTSBURG, Kans. - Offensively and defensively, the Jets dominated game three, recovering from a disastrous Saturday to win the series vs Pitt State after eight different Jets combined for 14 hits and 11 runs in an 11-0 defeat of the Gorillas.
Â
The Jets strung together a seven run 2nd inning and took out PSU's Tanner Leslie before he could pitch a full two innings.
Â
Dalton Smith safety squeezed in
Jason Schneider for the 1st run of the game.
Hayden VanDePol scored
Zack Stewart two at bats later and would then score on a
Shawn Marquis single.
Jake Angelico scored Marquis on a double to center and the very next at bat
Jenner Steele hit his 4th home run of the series and his 19th of the season to make it 7-0 after two innings.
Â
VanDePol made it 8-0 the next inning with a double to the left center gap that scored
Jack Kiser. VanDePol finished the game 2-3.
Â
The Jets plated two more runs in the top of the 7th inning to set themselves up for a dominant shutout run rule.
Â
Nate Denniston rode the wave of his offense this afternoon and gave Pittsburg State nothing to handle. Denniston struck out eight batters, one away from his season high. He gave up just three hits in the game and would throw six strong innings. He'd move to 4-4 on the season after the win.
Â
A familiar face came in to try and shut down Pittsburg State in the 7th. After the first two batters reached base,
Andrew Prieve was called upon with the task of closing the door on PSU and give the Jets the 11-0 shutout series victory. Prieve struck out the first two batters he faced and got the last batter of the game to fly out to center.
Â
The win moved the Jets to 21-26 overall and 13-17 in MIAA play. It is the 7th time the Jets have defeated Pittsburg State in program history and just the 2nd series win over the Gorillas. It is the 2nd shutout of the season for Newman, and first conference shutout of the season.
Â
With the win, the Jets still sit in 6th place in the MIAA standings. They're one game ahead of Rogers State and two games ahead of Emporia State. The Jets hold tie breakers over both teams after downing both the Hillcats and Hornets at home for series wins.
Â
Up next: The Jets finish out regular season play. After a huge series win in Pittsburg they'll head to Tahlequah, Oklahoma to face Northeastern State next Friday-Sunday. The Jets postseason hopes are on the line, and with a series win over the Riverhawks the Jets will clinch a spot in the MIAA tournament for the first time ever.
