TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - A late five run rally turned a 6-2 Jets lead into a 7-6 Riverhawks lead in the 8th inning that held the rest of the game.
Garrett VanDeventer was the game one started on the afternoon.. He struck out a career high ten batters in six innings pitched. Five of those ten came in the first two innings. Andrew Prieve moved to 1-4 on the season in the loss.
Jenner Steele accounted for four of the Jets six runs in the loss. Steele opened the scoring with a three run home run in the first inning, his 20th of the season. The home run scored Jake Angelico and Eli Wohl.
Things seemed to be going Newman's way late into the game. Up 4-2, Jake Angelico began the 7th inning with a double. Just a few pitches later Steele doubled to the left center gap to extend the lead to three. Zack Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to right center that just barely scored Steele to give Newman a four run lead.Â
Things turned in favor for the Riverhawks in the 7th and 8th innings. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs and all three runners would come around to score to make it a 6-5 Jet lead. NSU scored two more in the 8th inning, the final run scoring on a throwing error.Â
Newman went down in order in the 9th inning to give NSU the game one win. The loss moves Newman to 4-8 all time vs Northeastern State and gives Newman their third loss in four games vs the Riverhawks.Â
UP NEXT: NU will try and avoid the series lost in game two tomorrow at 2 PM. Asher Finke is the scheduled starter on the mound.Â
