Baseball clinches post season berth for first time since 2014 in 9-6 game two win at Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - For the first time since 2014, Newman baseball is post season bound. After dominating at the plate the Jets earned their first trip to the MIAA tournament in program history after a 9-6 win over Northeastern State. Newman led the entire game, giving starter Asher Finke the run support. Finke struck out a season high nine batters in 5.2 innings of work. Jason Schneider hit a two run home run in the 1st inning to give Newman a 2-0 lead. It was the 2nd time in as many days the Jets homered in the 1st inning. Northeastern would respond with a solo shot the next inning but solo home runs were all the Riverhawks could get off starter Asher Finke. Finke came in clutch when needed on the mound, getting strikeouts in tough situations to let the Jets offense tack on to their leads. Jake Angelico grounded out into an RBI to give NU the 3-1 lead after three innings. He'd hit a sacrifice fly with bases loaded the very next inning to earn his 2nd RBI of the afternoon. After giving up another NSU home run, Newman responded with a five run 6th inning. Jack Kiser walked with bases loaded, then Carson Hawks singled to score Schneider. Eli Wohl singled to left field to score Kiser. Shawn Marquis scored the Jets 9th run of the game when he lined out to right field to score Hawks on a sacrifice fly. The 9th run was all Newman needed. Colby Wilson relieved Finke after 5.2 innings of work and would strike out two batters before being taken out in the 9th inning. Ian Lecki was called upon to get the final two outs in the 9th with runners on 1st and 2nd and the tying run at the plate. He struck out the 1st batter he faced on five pitches then got the next batter to ground out into a fielders choice, sending Newman to the MIAA tournament for the first time in program history. It's a feel good moment for the Jets, who just barely missed the tournament a season ago.

The wins moves Newman to 22-27 and 14-18 in MIAA play. The 14 MIAA wins is most since joining the conference. With a win tomorrow, the Jets can clinch the 6 seed in the tournament. It would be the first ever series win over Northeastern State. The Jets and Riverhawks will battle it out in the rubber match set for 1 PM.
