Denniston, Lecki hold Emporia State to only 1 run in huge conference win on Senior Day

WICHITA - Baseball took a crucial series win over Emporia State, winning 2-1 in game 3 to earn the Jets first ever series win over the Hornets and give the Jets a huge win on senior day.

14 seniors were honored Saturday afternoon. Newman Athletics would like to thank Tyler Hamill, Jake Angelico, Jenner Steele, Carson Hawks, Anthony Ferrante, Justin Durnil, Nate Denniston, Andrew Prieve, Hayden VanDePol, Garrett VanDeventer, Zack Stewart, Asher Finke, and Trevor Pacheco for all of the hard work they have put into the baseball program, and Newman University as a whole.

With McCarthy Field at its highest attendance of the season, the Jets put on a show in one of its quickest games this season. Nate Denniston had arguably his best outing of the season. Denniston went 7.2 innings, striking out 7 Hornets and allowing just 4 hits. Denniston cooked the Hornets on the mound all day.

Ian Lecki earned his 2nd save of the season. Lecki dominated in his 1.1 innings pitched. He struck out 2 batters and allowed only 1 hit.

Emporia State's Ian Lanik pitched a complete game. Unlucky for him, his complete game would result in a loss. The Jets offense scored in just 1 inning but the inning was all they'd need since Denniston and Lecki slammed the door shot on the Hornet bats.

Jenner Steele led off the top of the 4th inning and would advance to 2nd base on an infield single by Zack Stewart. Carson Hawks would come up big for the men in powder blue with a single up the middle that scored Steele and advance Stewart to 3rd base. Up 1-0, Dalton Smith bunted the ball to the pitcher who then bobbled it as Stewart was running to the plate, giving Smith an RBI on the safety squeeze.

Zack Stewart was the only player from either with multiple hits on the afternoon. 5 Jets had hits in the win.

Newman moves to 19-20 overall and 11-12 in MIAA play. The win over the Hornets is the Jets 8th in program history and the series win is the first in program history over ESU. The Jets sit alone in  6th place in the MIAA standings heading in to their midweek matchup on the road in Hays, Kansas against Fort Hays State on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
