WICHITA - Both men's and women's cross country opened up there season on saturday as they competed at the JK Gold Classic at the Clapp Golf Course. Both teams had impressive days, with one of the men breaking the school record for 6k.
The record for a men's 6k was set in 2017 by Austin Lavin with a time of 19 minutes and 19 seconds.
Reagan Longei broke the record running the 6k in 18 minutes and 54 seconds.
Kevin Chemalmal came close to beating the record, with a 19 minute and 25 second race. Chemalmal now holds the third best time for the 6k.
"I feel very good about my performance," said Longei. "I fell back a little bit in the race, but I had to push. I am very proud to hold the school record."
Longei finished 12th overall, while Chemalmal finished in 18th.
The men would go on to finish third overall in the competition, beating out conference rival Emporia State by two points.
On the women's side,
Patricia Limo was the top runner for the Jets, finishing in 12th.
Lucy Brown and
Britton Kelly also had impressive days, finishing 14th and 20th respectively.
With the strong performance, the ladies were able to finish in second place, finishing only behind hosts Wichita State.
Both teams will head up to Lincoln, Nebraska for the Woody Greeno Invite on September 16th for their next races.
