JOPLIN, MO – Volleyball competed in two more matches at the Southern Invitational today, taking on Southern Arkansas and Cameron. The Jets went 0-2 yesterday, despite several strong sets that they dominated. Newman lost in 5 sets to Northwestern Oklahoma State in their first game, nearly coming back to win, while they would then go on to be swept by Southwest Baptist in their second outing.
Game 1
Newman opened the day against Southern Arkansas, with the game starting early at 9 A.M. The same problems that plagued the Jets in their second game yesterday showed up in this match as well.
Southern Arkansas went on a 9-2 scoring run near the middle of the set and never looked back. Several attacking and service errors led to Southern winning the set 25-15.
The next set played out in a similar fashion, as Southern Arkansas went on a lengthy scoring run in the middle of the set. The Jets showed more fight in this set, as they went on a mini scoring run of their own on four consecutive match points for the Muleriders, but once again fell short as the set ended 25-17.
The third set was back and forth in the early going, with both teams responding to each other until Southern Arkansas once again pulled away in the middle of the set, and went on to win 25-15.
Ozioma Ajekwu led the Jets in kills with 10, while McKenzie Weaver added 14 assists.
Game 2
The Jets took on Cameron in the Jets second matchup of the day. Newman had a much better outing, but still fell short losing in five sets.
The Jets won the first set of the game, going back and forth until the very end. Newman scored four straight to end the set, with the final being 25-19.
The two teams continued to go back and forth, as they would enter the fifth set evenly matched.
Cameron however would go on to dominate the final set, winning with an emphatic 15-5 victory to give the Jets their fourth loss of the season.
Newman will head on the road once again next week as they will compete in the Quincy tournament on Friday for a three game stand.
