Ajekwu returns as Jets fall to Griffons

Jets still seek first conference win

ST. JOSEPH, MO - Volleyball was defeated by Missouri Western in three sets on Thursday evening as Ozioma Ajekwu returned to the court following a several game absence.

The Jets were 0-2 in MIAA play, suffering back to back road losses to Pittsburg State and Central Oklahoma.

The Griffons dominated the first set, controlling the offensive flow of the game. The Jets were only able to muster 11 points in the first set, not coming close to challenging the lead except for the early stages of the set.

Newman took their first lead of the day in the second set, starting off on a strong foot with a 7-4 scoreline. Missouri Western crept in to retake a slight advantage and would end the set on a 9-2 run to win set 2.

The third set was almost the same as the second, with the roles reversed. After the Jets took a 2-0 lead to begin the set, the Griffons stormed back with seven straight points. The Jets would then go on a run of their own, leveling the score at 8-8.

The rest of the set would play out in similar fashion, with both teams making multiple runs but never being able to get too far ahead.

Ajekwu would score three straight kills for Newman deep in the set, with the Jets looking for their first set win since September 9th against Edinboro.

However, the Griffons were able to produce the final run of the set and win the match 3-0.

Mckinzie Weaver had 19 assists, which was her third most in a game this season. She now seven games with double digit assists this season.

Jets move to 0-10 following the loss.

The Jets will head to Maryville, Missouri tomorrow to take on #24 Northwest Missouri State at 6 PM.
