MARYVILLE, MO - The Jets were defeated in their final road match to open the season, losing in three sets to #24 ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats.
The Jets opened the season with 11 straight games on the road, with the final match taking place in Maryville.
The Bearcats opened the first set on a 6-0 scoring run before the Jets could respond. Newman went on several lengthy runs in their match against Missouri Western on Thursday, and were able to crawl their way back into the set, giving Northwest some worries near the midway point. The Bearcats were able to overpower Newman and won the set 25-16.
The second set was not nearly as competitive as the Jets would have liked, only being able to score 11 points in the set.
The Jets would take the lead for a short time in the third set, scoring three of the first four points between either team. The rest of the set went back and forth until the very end, with the Bearcats escaping with a 25-22 set win.
Mckinzie Weaver had a season high in assists for the Jets, with 26 coming in the game.
Ozioma Ajekwu led the Jets in kills with 10.
Newman will finally host their home opener next Thursday, taking on nationally ranked Nebraska-Kearney next Thursday. The Jets will also host Fort Hays State next Friday, before heading back on the road once again.
