Jets end non-conference slate with win over William Jewell

Volleyball goes 2-0 in home non-conference contests

WICHITA- The Jets hosted William Jewell for their last non-conference matchup of the season. The last time out in non-conference play, the Jets beat the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist in four sets. 
 
How It Happened:
- In set one, the Jets jumped out to an early 8-4 lead thanks to kills from Ozioma Ajekwu and McKenna Rhodes. The Cardinals also had a lot of unforced errors on their side of the net which allowed the Jets to extend their lead from 12-5. The Cardinals tried to go on a run to close the lead, but found themselves out of reach. The Jets took set one, 25-18. In the first set, three Jets recorded three kills. Avery Dempsey tallied ten assists in the first set. 
- The Jets took their momentum from a first set win into the second set by making a 17-2 run. With such a dominant run, the Cardinals were in too big of a hole to make a comeback. The Jets finished out the set with a 25-9 win. In the second set, Ajekwu led the Jets offense with five kills. Rhodes was only one kill behind her with four. Dempsey recorded another set with double-digit assists, with ten. 
- The Cardinals fought back in the third set making it an even back and forth contest. With the score at 12-11, they went on a run to extend their lead to four. The Jets closed the contest to an 18-16 game with a kill by Rhodes. However, two was as close as they would get for the remainder of the set. The Cardinals took the set, 25-19 forcing the Jets to a fourth set.
- Newman was able to take the lead first, taking an early 6-4 lead. The Cardinals put up a run to tie the game at 8-8. Kills by Natalie Meyer and Ajekwu helped the Jets form another run to take the lead 13-9. William Jewell found a way to tie the score again at 13 all. After the tie at 13, the Jets held the lead for the remainder of the set which allowed Newman to take the fourth set at 25-21.
- The Jets beat the Cardinals, 3-1. 
 
Player Notes:
- Dempsey sets a career high with 41 assists through four sets.
- Ajekwu led the offense with 17 kills on 33 attempts.
- Rhodes also recorded double-digit kills with 13.
- Natalie Trigo held down the back row with 21 digs.
 
The Jets head out on the road this weekend to face Washburn on Friday, October 4th at 6 PM and Emporia State on Saturday, October 5th at 7 PM.
