Hornets defeat Jets in a three set battle

Volleyball returns home on Tuesday to face Pittsburg State

EMPORIA, Kan.- The Jets finished off their weekend on the road at Emporia State. The last time out, the Jets fell to Washburn, 3-0. This time out, the Jets dropped a close three set battle with the Hornets. 

How It Happened:
- The Jets and Hornets were battling back and forth to begin the first set. Neither team would allow the other to put together a run. There were multiple lead changes throughout the set until the Hornets took the lead at 12-11 and went on a 5-2 run to take the largest lead of the game at three points. After this small run, the Hornets kept the momentum going and extended their lead to 20-14. The Jets couldn't close the gap, and fell in the first set 25-17. Ozioma Ajekwu and Natalie Meyer tallied three kills a piece in the set. Madalyn Hoot tallied four assists and four digs.
- In set two, the Hornets started with a run to take the early lead. The Hornets found themselves up 19-11 before the Jets found a run of their own to close the gap to just five points at 21-16. However, this late surge by the Jets wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. The Jets dropped set two, 25-19. As a team the Jets recorded 12 kills and three aces in the set. 
- The third set was another close battle. The Hornets found themselves up 12-9 until the Jets closed the gap to just a one point game by a block from Ajekwu. A kill by Kindred tied the game at 13 all. The Jets then took the lead by a kill from Hoot, 14-13. Emporia State retook the lead at the 15-14 mark and were able to extend their lead to 17-15 which caused Newman to take a timeout. After the timeout, the Jets battled to stay in the set and successfully tied the game at 20 all to make the Hornets take a timeout. After the Hornets timeout, the Jets retook the lead at 22-21 by a huge block from Ajekwu and Makenna Reinert. A kill by Silvia Fisher tacked on another point for the Jets, 23-21, which forced the Hornets to take their second timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Hornets were able to put a run together that closed out the game. The Jets fell, 26-24 in the third set. Newman recorded 15 kills and five blocks in the final set. 
- Jets drop match, 3-0. 

Player Notes:
- Ajekwu led the Jets with ten kills.
- Meyer adds eight kills.
- Natalie Trigo records 10 digs with five assists. 

Newman is back in action on Tuesday, October 8th at 6 PM against Pittsburg State at Fugate Gymnasium.
