WICHITA- The Jets hosted Pittsburg State to start their stretch of home games this week. The Gorillas defeated the Jets in four sets after Newman took the first set of the night.
How It Happened:
-The Jets came into the first set with a lot of energy. It was a back and forth battle between both teams for the entirety of the set. The Jets found themselves down 11-9 but came storming back to take the lead at 14-11. Pittsburg State tried to rally back but kills by
Silvia Fisher and
Ozioma Ajekwu helped keep the Jets lead. At the 22-16 mark, in favor of the Jets, the Gorillas finally found a run and tied the game at 23 all. The Gorillas had a chance to take the set with a match point at 24-23, but a kill by Ajekwu retied the game. The Jets finally won the set at 27-25 with Ajekwu finishing it off with another kill. Ajekwu tallied five kills in the first set.
-In set two, the Gorillas jumped out to an 8-1 run. Kills by Fisher and
Natalie Meyer gave the Jets some energy in the middle of the set. However, the Gorillas initial run was too large for the Jets to overcome. Pittsburg State took set two, 25-16.
-In the third set, the Jets and Gorillas were trading back and forth points until the 5-3 mark. After that point, the Gorillas were able to go on a run to extend their lead to 13-3. A kill by Meyer ended the Gorillas run, but the next point Pittsburg State added a few more to take their lead to 16-4. Another kill by Meyer ended another Pittsburg State run, but the Jets didn't have enough time to make a comeback. The Jets fell in the third set, 25-13. Ajewkwu added four kills in the set.
-The Jets took the early lead in the fourth set, with two kills by Ajekwu and a kill by Meyer to take the lead 5-2. After this lead, the Gorillas made a run of their own to take the lead, 11-6. Another kill by Ajekwu and a service ace by
Brooklyn Lane closed the gap to just three points at 13-10. Pittsburg State then extended their lead to 18-12. A kill by
Makenna Reinert and Meyer tried to get the Jets offense going, but the Gorillas were able to close out the set, 25-15.
