Jets battle Tigers in four set loss

Volleyball falls 3-1 to Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan.- Volleyball headed out on the road to take on Fort Hays State. The last time out, the Jets faced Pittsburg State on the road, and fell short 3-0. This time out against the Tigers, the Jets dropped a four set battle to the Tigers.
 

How it Happened:

-In the first set the Tigers were able to jump to 4-0 lead to start the set. A kill by Hannah Tymitz and a service ace by Natalie Meyer helped cut the Tigers lead to 4-3. After this mark, the set was a battle between the two teams. The Tigers held onto the lead until the Jets took it at 14-13 off of a Tigers hitting error. Meyer helped the Jets keep their lead with more kills and Ozioma Ajekwu added a few herself. The Jets and Tigers were tied at 20 all when a service ace by Brooklyn Lane took the lead 21-20. The Tigers were able to re tie it at 21 all. A kill from MAkenna Reinert allowed the Jets to retake the lead, causing Fort Hays to take a timeout. After the timeout, Reinert added another kill to extend their lead to 23-21. The Tigers tried to battle back but another kill from Reinert and a service ace from Avery Dempsey closed out the first set. The Jets took set one, 25-22. 

- In set two, the Tigers started with a 5-0 run. The Jets tried to rally back, but Fort Hays continued adding to their lead.  The Tigers had control of the set at the 10-3 mark. The Jets then started to put a run together after kills by Reinert and McKenna Rhodes that made the game 10-6. Newman continued to battle to keep the set within reach until Fort Hays found themselves on another run to take control against 17-10. After this run by the Tigers, the Jets were unable to rally back. Fort Hays took set two, 25-14. 

-The third set was another close battle. The game was back and fort until the 7-7 mark. Fort Hays went on a small run to take the lead at 14-11. The Jets climbed back within one point after the Tigers offense started making errors. A kill by Rhodes finally allowed the Jets to take back the lead at 16-15. Another kill by Silvia Fisher extended Newman's lead to 17-15. The Tigers battled back after this to re take the lead at 19-18. After the Tigers regained the lead, Newman was able to tie it back up at 21 all from a kill by Tymitz. However, the Tigers were able to grind out the win at the end. Fort Hays State took set three, 25-22.

- The Jets and Tigers battled the fourth set into extra points. The Jets had control of the game through the first points of the set. The Jets were able to go on a 7-3 run to start the game. Kills by Reinert, Rhodes, and Tymitz helped battle for the lead taking the Jets to a 10-8 lead. Fort Hays pulled within one point at the 11-10 mark, but Newman kept battled and pulled away with a 17-14 lead. The Tigers didn't go away, pulling the game to 20 all. Fort Hays then took the lead at 22-20. The Jets stopped the Tigers momentum after a kill by Ozioma Ajekwu to make the score 22-21. The Jets would re tie it at 22 all and then take the lead back at 23-22 after a service ace by Reinert. Fort Hays then re took the lead at 24-23 which forced the Jets to take a timeout. After the timeout, the Jets tied the game back up at 24 all. Hays would take the lead again at 25-24 but the Jets continued to battle back and tied it at 25 all after a Hays error. After the tie at 25-25, the Tigers were able to put two points together to take the fourth set 27-25. 

-The Jets fell to the Tigers, 3-1. 

Player Notes:

-Reinert led the Jets offense with 13 kills. 

-Tymitz added 12 kills. 

-Rhodes tallied 10 kills.

- Natalie Trigo led the defense with 18 digs. 

The Jets head to Nebraska to face the No. 5 Lopers on Saturday at 3 PM.
