Jets clinch playoff spot with tie at NSU

Melon scores first career goal

Tahlequah, Okla. -Newman faced Northeastern State in their second Oklahoma game of the week. After an eventful loss to Rogers State on Thursday, the Jets were looking to bounce back to winning ways. A point against NSU is all Newman needed to clinch a spot in the post season GAC/MIAA Championships for the first time in program history. Northeastern was coming off of a 4-2 loss to Fort Hays State on Thursday evening. The match ended 1-1. Newman clinched a spot in the post season, something that hasn't happened since 2018 when the Jets played in the Lone Star Conference Championships.

How It Happened
  • The match started with both teams having multiple shots on goal and testing the goalkeepers. In the 15th minute, Tomas Melon headed in his first career goal off of a precise corner kick cross from Gustavo Dias Juliani. Melon's first goal comes in his first ever start as a Jet. After the goal, Newman dominated most of the first half adding two more shots on goal from Alberto Romano late in the half, and maintaining the possession of the ball. Northeastern had three more shots to end the half with a total of 6.
  • With half of the work done to make history, the Jets came out to battle in the second half. But, the RiverHawks weren't done just yet. A corner kick and multiple rebounds in the 51st minute saw NSU score and tie the game 1-1. After that goal, the game became a back and forth battle with both teams looking for ways to score the leading goal. Both teams were able to record four shots throughout the half but none of them were enough to beat the keepers. A great defensive effort from Newman prevented any chance for the RiverHawks to score another goal. With an agonic final, the Jets were able to come out with the point they needed to reach their much desired objective. The match ened 1-1.
