WICHITA - The Jets hosted the Fort Hays State Tigers in their last home game of the season. After making history by clinching a spot in the GAC/MIAA postseason for the first time in program history, Newman hosted the number 16 ranked team in the nation for their last home game of the 2024 campaign. The Tigers were coming off of a tie against the Rogers State Hillcats in what was a battle for the regular season championship. The match ended 1-3 in favor of the visiting Tigers.
How It Happened
- The match started with two early shots from the Tigers that forced a corner kick in the seventh minute. Off of that corner, three Fort Hays players combined to put up the first Tiger goal of the evening. The Jets attempted a total of five shots in the first half to try to level the score, but none of the shots were precise enough to get through the Tigers goal keeper. A former Jet, Felix Tellez Ramirez, who played for Newman for four years, returned to Wilkins but this time representing Fort Hays State. Ramirez had a shot on goal late in the first half that was saved by Juan Carlos Cordova.
- In the third minute of the second half, the Tigers found the back of the net for the second time in the game after a combination between Elias Ovelar and Fabian Gylden. Ten minutes later, FHSU scored their third goal off of a counter attack that ended with Tadgh Walsh scoring his 4th goal of the season. Despite being down three goals, the Jets stayed in the game and fought hard to reduce the difference. In the 63rd minute a fantastic free kick strike from Gael Gonzalez passed through the Tigers goal keeper to give the Jets their first goal of the evening and Gonzalez his third of the season. After the goal, the Jets tallied four more shots in a late attempt for a comeback but it wasn't enough. The Tigers took the game 1-3.
